Picture-in-picture (PIP) is an option on Dish Network satellite receivers that enables you to view two programs at the same time: the main picture seen in a regular size and a second picture which is much smaller and placed on top of the first one. While PIP can be handy for monitoring two shows simultaneously, it might be intrusive or annoying at some point. Luckily, most of the Dish receivers have provided easy ways to turn off the PIP feature from working. Here is a step-by-step guide to turning off PIP on various Dish Network receivers:
If using a Hopper 3 or a Hopper with a Sling Receiver
Out of all the receivers offered by Dish, Hopper 3 and Hopper with Sling are the most innovative. Follow these instructions to disable PIP:
- While watching TV, you have to press the blue button that is found on your Dish remote. This opens the Quick Settings menu.
- Use the arrow buttons to select the Applications tab. Press the middle key on the remote control and click on the “Applications” tab.
- Press the center button again and then select the “Multi View” option.
- Press the “PIP. ” The PIP setup menu will come up with different settings that can be adjusted to enhance the PiP mode.
- Beside where it is written “PIP Status”, use the arrow keys to switch to “Off”. There can also be a toggle switch which you can switch to the “Off” position.
- Press the back button of your remote control twice in order to get out of the PIP options. PIP should now be disabled on your receiver.
In a VIP or Hopper Receiver
For slightly older Dish receivers like the VIP and standard Hopper models, the steps are almost identical:
- If you are listening to your chosen program, press the ‘Menu’ button twice in quick succession to access the Quick Settings option.
- Move down and pick “Applications” on your remote control by pressing the middle key.
- Next, select “Multi View” and then go to “PIP”.
- Follow the same procedure and turn the toggle switch at the bottom of the screen to “Off” to disable PIP Status.
- To get out of the settings, press the “Menu” button on the remote control two time.
On a ViP 722 or Other Receiver
If you have an older Dish receiver like the ViP 722k model, here are the steps to turn off PIP:If you have an older Dish receiver like the ViP 722k model, here are the steps to turn off PIP:

The PIP should now be turned off and on that set top box, you will only get a single channel at a time.
Pip Status On a Dish Receiver
To ensure that you’ve enabled or disabled PIP on your Dish receiver after making the necessary changes, switch between two different channels then press the PIP button on the remote.
If PIP is disabled, then no action should be taken when PIP button is pressed on the remote. The channel should not go into a small overlay window. To turn the picture-in-picture off, the Status should remain in “Off” position in the Multi View or PIP Settings menu.
How to Re-Enable PIP on Your Dish Box
At any time, you can follow the same procedure above and turn back on PIP by switching the PIP Status toggle switch to “On” instead of “Off. ” Most Dish receivers remember your previous settings so it should only take a few minutes to toggle the PIP On/Off above in the menus or with the PIP button on your Dish remote.
Using Alternate PIP Controls
In addition to the receiver settings menus, there are a couple of alternate ways to control PIP:
- Pressing the PIP button on the Dish remote. This works like a switch to turn on/off the picture-in-picture when it is supported on that receiver.
- You can control PIP using the Dish Anywhere mobile app and to switch the channels between the main screen and PIP window.
Therefore if ever you were of the opinion that two channels on screen are too many to handle, all you have to do is follow the above steps to turn off picture in picture in different dish set top boxes. And when you wish to return to watching two channels simultaneously, switch PIP on again.
