How To Hook Up Tivo To Dish Network?

  • It is among the best digital video recorders (DVRs) that enable one to record live TV, pause, or rewind. It puts the entire power of your choice in your hands regarding what you want to watch on the television. Dish Network is a satellite television service provider that has relatively low-priced offers and a satisfactory number of channels. There are many individuals with Dish Network who also have a TiVo device and are curious about how to connect it to the Dish setup. Fortunately, there is specific equipment that can be used to connect TiVo to the Dish Network. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to make it work:

    Get the Necessary Equipment

You will need the following equipment to connect TiVo to Dish Network:

    • TiVo DVR (TiVo Romario, TiVo Bolt and others).
    • Dish Network satellite receiver models (ViP 211z, ViP 722k, etc)
    • USB IR blaster
    • HDMI cables

The important points to remember are that your TiVo DVR should have Ethernet integrated and that your Dish receiver should be of Dish Pro model (it should have ‘ViP’ in its name). Any Dish receivers that are older than this model and do not contain integrated Ethernet ports will not be compatible.

You will also need a USB infrared blaster. The TiVo device plugs into your Dish receiver and, through this connection, receives instructions from TiVo to change channels and manage recordings.

    Set Up TiVo DVR

First, make sure that you have your TiVo device ready if you haven’t installed it yet. The basic steps include:

    1. Solder an HDMI cable from the TV to the TiVo box
    2. Tune TiVo to home internet router using Ethernet
    3. A full scan of the TV broadcasting to obtain the list of programs.
    4. The last step is to activate TiVo service if you subscribe to the monthly plan.

Once your TiVo box is completely connected, you can now proceed with the Dish setup.

Link up Dish Receiver to TiVo

I have mentioned that connecting to Dish is done in two ways: hardware and software.

    Hardware Connections:

    1. Tune the Dish receiver to the TV using the HDMI cable
    2. Tun the Dish receiver to the home router with the help of an Ethernet cable
    3. Insert the USB IR blaster into the free USB port of the Dish receiver. Position the IR blaster in front so it has a line of sight.

    Software Setup:

    1. Looking in Dish receiver settings, enable Sling connectivity
    2. For the TiVo, go to Settings > Remote, Cable CARD & Devices > External Device Setup
    3. Choose the option ‘Use IR blasters and network control’.
    4. On the next screen, select ‘Dish Network’
    5. Choose your Dish receiver model
    6. Proceed with the steps provided to manage IR control from TiVo and sync

The setup process will take a while to complete, and if no errors occur, your Dish receiver will be interfaced with TiVo. This means that TiVo will be able to tune channels, manage recordings of shows and movies, as well as access On-Demand shows and movies from the Dish box.

    Enable Single Tuning Mode

By default, the Dish receiver and TiVo will handle tuning of the television independently. This uses two tuners.

To enable a single tuner mode:

    1. On TiVo, navigate to Settings > Remote, Cable CARD & Devices > External Control
    2. Next, choose ‘Use Tuning Adapter’ and select Dish Pro channel lineup
    3. Select the output interface for the Dish receiver
    4. Go to ‘Calibration Settings’ then select ‘External Device Controls Tuning’.
    5. Click next to set tuning channels

By enabling this, your TiVo remote is going to be able to switch channels on the Dish receiver without going through the TV. There is only one tuner active at a time, meaning you can schedule more programs for recording at the same time.

    Set Up OnePass Recordings

Of all the benefits of the integration of TiVo and Dish, one of them is the OnePass recordings. OnePass functionality allows you to record a show on multiple channels and connect streaming services.

    To create a OnePass:

    1. Get a show to tape
    2. Select “Record entire series”
    3. Some of the flexible choices include Channels, quality of the channel, time to start airing, and time to stop airing.
    4. To do so, go to Organize > Preferences and make sure you select ‘Include Streaming Content’ to include episodes from apps like Netflix.

That’s it! The OnePass will now start automatically recording on a Dish DVR tuner or stream episodes through Internet apps for the most convenient watching.

And that’s all folks! By following the steps above, you can easily connect your TiVo device to a Dish Network receiver for integrated control, channel tuning, and recording. Say goodbye to your boring TV-watching experience!
