Another advantage that comes with having a DIRECTV receiver is the possibility of using only one remote control for your receiver and TV. This makes it possible to switch on/off your television and control the volume of the television without using different remotes. It will only take you a few minutes to set up this feature on your phone.
Check TV & Receiver Compatibility
First and foremost, ensure that your TV and the DIRECTV receiver are capable of supporting this feature before proceeding further. Currently, most of the new generation of HDTVs and DIRECTV HD receivers support remote code control setup. Please consult the manufacturers’ manuals for your specific TV and receiver models to ensure compatibility.
As for an older standard definition DIRECTV receiver, there may be no option for directly controlling the TV. However, you can usually change it using a tool known as an IR blaster for this function.
Locate TV Codes
DIRECTV receivers are shipped with preset codes for most of the popular TV brands on the market. You just have to find the right code.
Look at the sticker on the back part of your DIRECTV remote control. It will include a list of some of the popular TV brand codes. It is also possible to obtain complete lists of codes either through the DIRECTV website or in the manual of your receiver.
If you cannot find your TV brand, then search for the model number of the TV along with the term ‘DIRECTV remote code’. If the code is not included in the list, you can try the automatic code detection described in the next step.
Set TV Input
Before you begin programming the remote you should ensure that your television input/output is on the port where your DIRECTV receiver is connected to. This is usually HDMI1, HDMI2, Component, Video, etc. If you can see the DIRECTV user interface on your TV then you are set on the correct input.
Program Remote Code
First, make sure that your television is on, then press the MUTE and ENTER buttons on your DIRECTV remote simultaneously while a green light at the top of the remote blinks two times.
After that, input the 3, 4, or 5-digit remote code for your TV brand using the number buttons available on your remote. If the code is accepted the light will flash twice again.
Now try simple functions such as power, volume, and channel change to see if they respond. If so, the setup is complete As stated earlier, the proposed system will consist of three primary components: namely the application, database, and operating system.
Try Automatic Code Detection
If the manual code does not work, you can let the DIRECTV remote scan through all its codes and search for the correct code on its own.
Begin this operation by pressing MUTE and then pressing ENTER until the light blinks twice. Press 0 on the number keys followed by 0 and then 0 again.
The DIRECTV receiver will now enter into a mode where it will search through the codes while you hold down the power button of the remote and point it toward the TV. When the TV turns off, stop pressing power – the code should now be set!
Program Additional Devices
Once your DIRECTV remote is programmed for your TV’s power and volume you can do the same to the audio device such as a sound bar or stereo. The setup steps are identical.
Almost all other devices come with IR blaster control as opposed to direct code control. An IR blaster is supposed to be installed from the back of the receiver to ‘fire’ IR signals at the equipment.
And that's it! With those steps, your DIRECTV remote could become the one remote for your whole home theatre system. Say goodbye to switching between multiple remotes!
Using the Interactive Program Guide
With the DIRECTV interactive program guide, all your entertainment choices are conveniently summarized and it becomes easy to decide which one to consume. Below is a brief guide on how to work with the program guide to get the most out of it.
Accessing the Guide
To open the program guide on your DIRECTV, navigate to the GUIDE button on your remote. You can also use the MAIN MENU and click on the GUIDE.
The guide opens by default to the shows and movies that are currently airing live at the moment. Press the arrow buttons on the remote to move the highlight around the grid and select various programs.
Browsing Channels & Time Slots
The vertical axis may display the list of channels while the horizontal axis may represent the list of programs in terms of time slots. Use the up/down keys to navigate the channels and the left/right keys to switch between different periods.
To go forward or backward by 24 hours, one can use the ADVANCE or REPLAY buttons on the remote when a particular program is selected. This allows you to scroll through the full week’s program conveniently.
Getting Program Information
When you highlight any program tile, details will display at the top or bottom of the screen, including:
- Channel # and call sign
- Program Title and Episode Information
- Content rating and year
- Examples of generic programs include comedy, sports, or news.
- Work schedule including start time/end time and its duration
- This is a brief description of the program, including the list of actors.
These details can be viewed immediately after a program has been highlighted; one only needs to press the arrow up button.
Filtering By Genre
If you want to watch only some specific programs, you can go to the GENRE FILTERS by pressing the YELLOW button. Choose the category tabs such as Movies, Sports, or Kids. You can even blend one or more genres, as some films belong to more than one genre.
Such filtering helps in the search for content that is relevant to the client’s interests. To stop viewing the channel by genre, click on the ALL tab.
Searching for Programs
If you know the name of the program you are looking for, or the movie that is showing, enter “SEARCH” in your remote. To search the titles, cast, or descriptions, the user types the keywords using the onscreen keyboard.
Following a query, search results will be displayed by categories. For instance, you may find individual matching titles, full TV series, on-demand movies, and upcoming programs.
Setting Reminders & Recording
You have your guide in front of you, and when you locate a program you don’t want to miss, you press the SELECT button. Select “Set Reminder” if you want an onscreen reminder before it begins. You can also select “Record” to program the DVR to record the program on your behalf.
The MANAGE REMINDERS in the menu allows you to customize the alerts and prioritize the recordings. The program guide enables a person to set the next program he or she would like to watch with lots of ease.
So, do not hesitate and start exploring the DIRECTV guide to get acquainted with all available options. Fortunately, since there are loads of features, channels, and programs, you will not run out of programs to watch.
