    Disable Shared View Dish Hopper

  • The Dish Network Hopper is a satellite television receiver that enables the user to view and record programs from different rooms in a home setting. It allows you to watch live or recorded shows on multiple TVs with the help of the Shared View option. Nevertheless, you may need to turn off Shared View the prevent disclosure of your data or the concern about your available bandwidth. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to turn off Shared View on your Hopper:

    What Is Shared View?

It is a feature that lets you view live or DVR recording content at the same time on up to four TV sets connected to the Hopper receivers. For instance, one can begin to watch a recorded program in the living room and continue from the point where the program is interrupted in the bedroom. It has a feature known as multi-Room, which connects your Hopper and Joey receivers into one single network.

    Why Disable Shared View?

Here are some reasons you may want to disable Shared View:

    • Privacy –This is because with Shared View enabled, anyone watching TV in another room can see what you are watching. This was found to be more private when disabled.
    • Bandwidth usage – Shared View transmits content to multiple TVs, which consumes the internet data. If it is enabled, and you have a bandwidth limit, it is advisable to disable it.
    • Eliminate confusion – When you find another TV pause, exit out, or delete a recording that you are not watching, it becomes slightly confusing.
    • Troubleshooting – You can turn off Shared View to check the connectivity between boxes only.

How to disable the shared view

Follow these instructions to disable Shared View on your Hopper and Joey boxes:

    1. To get to the main menu, press the Home button on your Hopper remote twice.
    2. Select Settings, then Whole-Home.
    3. Choose Share Mode Setup.
    4. On the next screen, click Select Receiver Share Groups. This tells you which rooms are currently configured for content sharing.
    5. Enter each Joey location where you wish to switch off the shared view. To remove the checkmark next to it, press the red ‘A’ button on your remote. This prevents Joey from sharing opinions and videos with the Hopper.
    6. After making the changes, use Done to complete the process. Hence, the selected Joeys will now show the message “Do Not Share” below them to signify that they are not sharable.

Note: These steps remove Joey's boxes from the sharing group. In many cases, the Hopper itself can not be removed from the group entirely, although it can be ‘killed’ for a certain period.

    Alternative: Pause Shared View

If you only need to temporarily stop Shared View, there is a faster way without disbanding the share group:

    1. Press the Home button twice > Settings > Whole Home > Share Mode
    2. Choose Pause Sharing Rather Than Receiver Share Groups
    3. Select Shared on Hopper or Shared on Joey
    4. Choose the time in hours for how long you want to stop sharing (1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours).

The shared view feature will be disabled after the selected timeout, but it will also re-enable itself on its own. Use this as a fast method to prevent sharing for a short period.

    Re-Enable Shared View

Follow the steps below when you want to start sharing content between your Hopper and Joeys again:

    1. Press Home twice > Settings > Whole Home > Share Mode
    2. Select Receiver Share Groups
    3. Select any of the Joeys you wish to enable sharing for by ticking the box next to them
    4. Then finally, there is the Done option, which will help you to save the changes.

The Joey receivers should show “Share Connected” to let the user know that sharing has been resumed with the main Hopper.

    In Summary

The Dish Network Hopper has incorporated Shared View which can allow the shows to be viewed on multiple TVs. Still, there are moments when this feature should be turned off for private, bandwidth, and diagnostics purposes. This is useful for toggling the desired service on and off for sharing live TV and DVR content while leaving the rest of the multi-room service intact. Pair this feature with the temporary Pause Sharing button for complete control over your Hopper’s sharing of viewing.
