  • Due to the progression of ultra-high definition TVs and their content, streaming 4k videos is steadily becoming more common. A large number of streaming services provide at least some 4K content, and support 4K streaming in a way. But does this include DIRECTV Now? It is also necessary to take a closer look at whether the DIRECTV streaming service provides the option of streaming in 4K.

    What are 4K and UHD?

Now let’s define 4K and Ultra High Definition (UHD) before discussing DIRECTV Now 4K capabilities. 4K means the video with an approximate width of 4,000 pixels in the horizontal dimension. It has four times the pixel resolution of 1080p high-definition video. Ultra HD or UHD is almost equivalent to 4k. However, for the streaming providers and TV makers, UHD is a little more specific, meaning 4K video that also supports WCG and HDR.

Almost all the 4K streaming available today comes with HDR to enhance colors and contrast. Although, in this article, we will be mainly using the term 4K streaming, it is important to note that this will often include UHD 4K with HDR.

Are there 4K Channels or Programs on DIRECTV Now?

One of the major shortcomings of the DIRECTV Now service is that it currently does not air any 4K ultra high definition channels or programs. Unlike some competitors like fuboTV or YouTube TV, DIRECTV Now has yet to add any 4K streaming to its lineup of packages and add-ons. In the same way, for the subscribers who want to watch live sports, movies, or shows in 4K UHD streaming, currently DIRECTV Now does not allow this.

As with the previous packages, there is no 4K package plan or add-on pack available with DIRECTV Now. And the top-tier plan, Gotta Have It, does not even include 4K streaming capabilities at all. As for the channel choice, you can find it in the Live a Little plan and higher, and the streaming quality is 1080p HD.

Expectations for Future 4K Streaming Improvements

Although DIRECTV Now has no 4K now, there might be a chance that it will develop UHD streaming soon. DIRECTV’s satellite service has some of the 4K channels, and it is rather logical that DIRECTV Now uses a lot of the same streaming technology. Therefore, 4K accommodations are possible in the future.

Moreover, in early 2018, AT&T also stated that it would start to integrate its services with 4K streaming after it had started the 5G network. Since DIRECTV Now belongs to telecom behemoth AT&T after the company purchased the DIRECTV brand in 2015 this likely encompasses DIRECTV Now. With 5G now available, it is hoped that DIRECTV Now will also get 4K in the future.

Workarounds: Watch videos from supported applications in high-definition format.

Although DIRECTV Now allows users to stream live or on-demand video in 4K themselves, the users can watch 4K and HDR video from other apps on a 4K streaming device or smart TV. For instance, the YouTube and Netflix apps that are usually found on most 4K TVs and media players will work effectively in Ultra HD.

So for those who can receive the content from Now DIRECTV, those with a 4K TV can still view some UHD in this manner through separate apps. Just remember, additional subscriptions or rentals could be through Netflix or Amazon Prime Video to access their 4K libraries though.

Recommendation: Stay at 1080p for The Time Being

With no 4K streaming services that are compatible with DIRECTV Now, most of the user base will have to set their preferred picture resolution for their devices at 1080p HD in the meantime. Stretching video to a size that is larger than its intended size usually results in a reduction in quality. Watching programs from DIRECTV Now on the standard 1080p will yield the best experience in both the HD and the 4K displays until the streaming service provider begins offering the 4K support.

The service still has a good list of channel packages and on-demand content although available only in HD format. And for a future-proof 4K streaming solution, services like FuboTV or YouTube TV are reasonable at the moment. However, do return for possible DIRECTV Now 4K support in the future as AT&T enhances its services within the next two years.

    Conclusion

While other companies provide 4K resolution in their products, such as DIRECTV’s satellite service, or competitors’ streaming alternatives, DIRECTV Now does not stream any video content in UHD quality. They still have not developed many of its channel packages and programs it offers for the platform, but they are limited to HD streaming. However, as AT&T continues to increase its streaming capabilities, DIRECTV Now could include 4K streaming capabilities in the future. For now, though, those who want live sports, shows, and movies in 4K will have to rely on other streaming services.
